One of the pioneers of baked goodness in the city, Golden Brown Bakery offers more than cupcakes. But it’s the cupcakes that I’m concentrating on now because they had me at first sight. My mother and I were walking in Thalateen Street one night when we decided to finally check out Golden Brown Bakery. The place has always caught our attention whenever we passed by the street and it was time to satisfy our curiosity. The Golden Brown Bakery beckons with its warm interiors. It has two counters where cupcakes, cheesecakes, tarts, croissants and other pastries are proudly displayed. They are oh-so inviting ! We couldn’t make up our minds with what to get at first. I zeroed in on the cupcakes because that was what I was looking for in the first place. Even choosing among the cupcakes proved to be a challenge! What flavors should I get?!
Finally, I decided to get mini cupcakes so I can taste lot of flavors. For SR3 each, I thought the cupcakes were a little bit overpriced. Seriously, that small for SR3 each?! But after getting a bite it was worth it. I can gobble that one up in a heartbeat. They’re too cute to be just gobbled up like that but I can’t help it. What I love the most about Golden Brown’s cupcakes is the icing. Yes, the luscious cream cheese icing. I just love it. I also like the strawberry, red velvet, blue velvet, and carrot cakes .. topped with the cream cheese icing of course. They’re moist and soft and delightful ! I have always ordered these four flavors ever since my visit .. Yes, drool-worthy much!
The spicy chocolate cupcake adds a nice kick to the usual. I tasted the spice from the powdered chili on the topping. The lavender and jasmine cupcake are also unique. The chocolate and vanilla cupcakes are a little bit dry and there’s nothing exceptional. Just okay. I like the way they personally decorate the cupcakes according to their flavors.
The bigger cupcakes go for SR6 a piece while there’s an even smaller cupcake for SR2. If I were you, get the big ones early in the morning because they’re freshly-baked and perfect for breakfast. You can also drop by after a day’s work for some sweet indulgence. GB always give a nice discount, mostly 10% off. Nice! There’s also a small area where guests are welcome to enjoy the pastries.
Golden Brown’s mini cheesecakes and tarts are also very good! The quality and taste of their cheesecakes are the ones I’ve been looking for in Riyadh. Glad that I found them in Golden Brown Bakery. I also like their almond croissant. They have cute mini burgers called Darling Burgers. And they also have mini sandwiches too. Golden Brown offers their pastries and sandwiches in platters and trays .. Excellent for parties!

I love Golden Brown and it’s a plus that’s it’s quite near our house compared to the other cupcake stores in the city. Why do I love Golden Brown? I have three main reasons:
1. Cupcakes, particularly the blue velvet, red velvet, and banana cupcakes. I’ve tasted a lot of cupcakes in the city but I kept on going back to Golden Brown because these three flavors have captured my heart a hundred times over. The bread is soft and nicely packed, the icing compliments the bread (cheese cream for the win!) and the mini versions are just too cute for words. Their flower-flavored cupcakes, in lavender, jasmine, and rose, are intriguing and just as good too. Though I tend to really go for the velvet ones, and the carrot sometimes.
2. Cheesecake. I have a specific type of cheesecake. I want it dense and a little bit moist and chewy; not the soft kind that tends to melt in my mouth quickly and tastes like sweet cream. Golden Brown has the type of cheesecake I want. Their mini cheesecake cups are to die for. I opt for the strawberry and oreo because the chocolate ones tend to be little bit too sweet. I like that since they’re pretty small; the cheesecake is not cloying. I eat a maximum of three pieces and I’m on my way.
3. Customer service. The staff are friendly and helpful. There was a time that I asked one of their salesman on every kind of pastry and bread in their counter (I’m curious, sorry!) and he answered each question. I like that they know what to suggest if you get overwhelmed with the choices. They also have a discount card (yes, I have it!) and Golden Brown texts their customers for promos. Golden Brown is also the only bakeshop I went to that has a dine-in option and I like that small place towards the back of the store. It’s well-hidden and gives the vibe of serenity for a normal coffee or tea time.
I’ve tasted the sandwiches of Golden Brown but I’m not into them as much as I’m into their cupcakes and cheesecakes. They were bland and needs more spices or sauces to make me eat another bite. As for their pastries, their croissants are nice and crunchy (love their double chocolate). Prices are average but it’s the parking that’s quite a problem when buying from Golden Brown. It’s in the corner of Thalateen and cars hog the slots and side streets. It’s always traffic in that part come rush hour so better park on the first slot you see near the street and walk to Golden Brown. Have a cupcake with lots of sprinkles or edible beads for instant happiness!
