There’s a new cupcake store in Riyadh and I’m writing about it hot off the oven. Just merely days after their opening, I visited Kitsch Cupcakes in Tahlia Street.
Kitsch Cupcakes started in Beirut, Lebanon and branched out to the UAE before coming to Riyadh, KSA. They have a cute store swathed in pink and white and walls with huge pictures of cupcakes staring down at me. I’m not hard to persuade when it comes to cupcakes so I immediately bought a dozen of their best flavors (according to the salesman). The cupcakes, topped with icing in neutral colors and sprinkled with colorful candy hearts and silver balls looked simple but decadent and creamy on display.
The red velvet cupcake is deserving of a special mention. I’m partial to cupcakes with cream cheese frosting because the tartness balances the sweetness and the combination worked well in this flavor. The rest of the flavors in my long box like ‘Double Chocolate’ and ‘Little Nutter’ can take a back seat. The icing, in a plain swirl atop the cake, is light and buttery. However, most of them are a tad too sweet. Take extra bites of the cake with it. The cake is soft and has the right density. The cupcakes are also baked fresh each day so the freshly-bought-from-the-store fineness remains for days (do not refrigerate!).
Overall, Kitsch cupcake is a welcome addition to the cupcake scene in Riyadh, with some flavors that really hit the mark.
